Paintings exploring the rituals of everyday life

I’m Craig Henderson, an Oxfordshire artist living near Henley-on-Thames. My paintings explore the rituals of everyday life through carefully composed domestic scenes that evoke celebration, companionship and quiet moments of reflection.

Working primarily in acrylic, I use bold colour, simplified forms and considered composition to transform familiar objects into vessels for human presence. Cups, flowers, books and tableware become traces of shared experiences, inviting viewers to recall their own memories and connections without depicting the figures themselves.

Whether portraying a lively gathering or a solitary morning coffee, my work explores how ordinary objects can carry atmosphere beyond their physical form. As my practice continues to evolve, I am increasingly interested in reducing these scenes to their essential visual elements, allowing colour, shape and space to communicate the emotional resonance of everyday rituals.

Introducing multi-way teascapes

My teascape paintings depict tables set for afternoon tea, where cups, plates, and small arrangements form a quiet, contained world.

Each multi-way painting comprises two or four panels that can be rearranged, so the image circulates through a series of possible forms. Nothing quite begins or ends; each configuration holds, then gives way to another.

You might think of them as toroidal teascape quadriptychs; four-part paintings that fold back on themselves, offering several ways to be seen.

A four-way painting depicting a table setting with cups, bowls, a vase with flowers, and a fruit bowl with oranges on a light-coloured table. The four panels of the quadriptych can be rearranged to change the composition of the overall piece.
